Nautor's Swan Sailing Yachts

It is close to a half century since Pekka Koskenkyla started building a series of 36' performance sailing yachts in Pietarsaari, Finland. It was a humble beginning for a company which would become the most prolific builder of luxury performance world cruising yachts. Since it's inception in 1966, Nautor's Swan has developed more than 50 designs and has over 2000 builds to their credit. While this may not seem a large number in a world of mass production, there are very few yacht builders capable of this level of sophistication that can claim even half Nautor's production...

The early designs including the original 36' were conceived by Sparkman & Stephens (S&S). In fact over 1000 hulls can be attributed to S&S during the years 1966-1984 with a design range of 36' to 76'. The emphasis on all of these designs was performance. While Nautor has always built a luxurious, state of the art, world cruising sailing yacht, their Swans are first and foremost outstanding sailing machines. Swan yachts had a number of successes on the race course in their early years winning races in the 1968 Cowes Week, the 1972 Bermuda Race and most impressively, a first place finish by Swan 65 Sayula II in the 1973/74 Whitbread Round the World Race.

With the demand for increased performance, Nautor commissioned Ron Holland in 1978 to start a new series of what could be considered cruiser/racers. This collaboration saw 5 designs and 283 builds from 1978 to 1987 ranging from 37' to 44'. During this period the Swan designs took on a more contemporary look and Holland's Swan 42, launched in 1980, is a prime example. Rounder sections and wider hulls with beam carried well aft made for good initial stability and also benefited the interior layout giving more space through the mid-section in the saloon and in the owners cabin aft.

In 1981, in an effort to broaden their appeal, Nautor enlisted the talents of German Frers. Frers' first design, the Swan 51, was a huge success and set the stage for what has become one of the longest ongoing collaborative partnerships in the yachting industry. With a continued emphasis on cruiser/racer performance the designs have continued to follow the modern trend of shallower hulls with a flat run aft, plumb bows with wide sections aft, and narrow fin keels. There are a myriad of Frers' designs in Nautor's "SwanLine" now spanning 30 plus years and to date are responsible for over 900 hulls. Most recently Frers' designed Swan's have joined the "Superyacht" club with the development of several large world cruising yachts. These designs are all available in either flush deck (FD), semi-raised saloon (S) or raised saloon (RS) and include the 100, 105, 112, 115 and 131.

Nautor's Swan has been one of the leaders in the development of the modern sailing yacht. They have always been early adopters of new materials and building processes and because they have been so prolific they have been able to refine their production and achieve a tremendous level of consistency. All of Nautor's builds are semi-custom in nature which has broadened their capability over the years and allowed them to produce evermore sophisticated designs.

If you have ever known a Swan owner then you know they are a fiercely loyal group and many have owned more than one of their designs. Nautor has an impeccable track record and the global appeal of the "SwanLine" has lead to an international owner's club known as "SwanClub". One of the added benefits of owning a Swan is you can participate in the yachting events which the club sponsors around the world each year. There are cruising rendezvous in some of the most exotic sailing locations, one-design events for the class boats, as well as several major regattas held in Europe, North America and the main event which is the biennial "Rolex Swan Cup" held in Porto Cervo, Sardinia.

Whether you are a racer or a cruiser there is something for everyone and being with a group that shares the passion of sailing is always a great experience.
