Whirlwind Broker Report

  Length: 90'/27.65m Built: Mfg-1998 Rft-2013
Location: Palm Beach, FL Price: $Inquire

I recently had the opportunity to inspect another of Andre Hoek's brilliant designs. Hoek is well known for his contemporary/classic designs and has been among the most prolific over the last 25 years. These yachts always fascinate me with their blend of old and new. Conventional looking in many respects but thoroughly modern at the same time. "Whirlwind" is just such a design. She is a 90' all aluminum sail yacht built by one of the world's premier builders, Holland Jachtbouw. Originally launched in 1998 as "Aeolian" this custom build has all the visual cues of a traditional hull design but with a decidedly modern deckhouse, cockpit and underbody. "Whirlwind" fits very nicely into the design category which Hoek has dubbed "semi-classic".

Sailing Performance

"Whirlwind's" design brief called for maximizing interior volume while preserving sailing performance. To accomplish this Hoek starts with a moderate displacement hull and gives her a beam of 6.6m which is carried well aft to give you added space below and flexibility when laying out the interior. To ensure performance, the design carries a tall cutter-rigged sail plan with 410m2 of canvas and enough keel to get you upwind.

The accommodation plan revolves around a split saloon arrangement. The raised saloon in the deckhouse has a dinette to port, a nav desk to starboard and stairs which lead to the aft end of the galley below. Excellent setup for crew flow when serving quests in the upper saloon and cockpit areas. The forward end of the saloon has a centerline staircase which descends to the lower saloon. This space has a C-shaped settee with coffee table to port and a complete office space with desk to starboard. Additional access to the pullman style galley is aft to starboard.

Forward of the saloon to port is the master stateroom with ensuite. The crew quarters are forward to starboard. There is a separate crew mess, head and two cabins which can sleep 4 crew. Twin guest cabins with ensuites are aft port and starboard, and are accessed by stairs at the aft end of the upper saloon. All of the guest staterooms have additional pullman berths which makes for comfortable sailing offshore. The joinery work below is excellent as you might expect from a Dutch builder steeped in the shipbuilding history of Zaandam. Furniture is simple and elegant with tasteful use of teak and mahogany.

Engine room access is through a hatch in the sole of the upper saloon. The main is a Lugger L6125A (new in 2007) which gives her a top speed under power of 10 knots. There are 2 - 24k Northern Lights gensets. One is newly installed with 50 hrs, the other was rebuilt in 2013 and has approximately 5000 hrs. The shore power transformer allows for 220V - 60 Hz, 380V - 50 Hz, 220V - 50 H conversions making it easy to plug-in wherever your cruising may take you. The air conditioning is a 96,000 BTU reverse cycle system with 2 compressors and 9 zones. Watermaker is a HEM 25 series unit capable of 50 gallons/hour.

"Whirlwind's" deck layout is very clean and well thought out. She has a low profile deckhouse framed with teak trim which gives her a touch of the modern. The entire deck surface is teak planked which is beautifully executed and shows very little wear. Bulwarks have a teak caprail and the coachroof and cockpit coamings are accented with a teak eyebrow giving her a very elegant look. Functionally Hoek's design centers around a dual cockpit arrangement. There is a large entertainment cockpit with wrap-around seating and dinette tables port and starboard just aft of the deckhouse. This is a wonderful space with plenty of room for lounging and entertaining. The sailing cockpit is just aft and connects for easy access. Separating these functions lets the guests relax in comfort and keeps the helm clear while underway.

All running rigging and sail handling is accomplished by 2 Lewmar hydraulic power packs which drive all the winches and Reckmann furling systems on the headstay and inner forestay. She carries a large fully battened main which is setup on a Fredricksen ballbearing car system and is designed to stack in her "Park Avenue" boom. Winch placement and fairleads keep the side decks and seating areas clear and make for easy access fore and aft. Primary and secondary winches are aft of the helm and easily managed on the after deck area without interfering with the helmsman. Mainsheet winch and self-tending staysail winch are port and starboard of the helm.

"Whirlwind" has been cruised extensively and has proven to be a very capable passagemaker. She is well suited for charter with her 3 stateroom layout and her ease of handling allows for a small crew. She has had a recent refit in 2013 which included Awlgrip hull painting, new suit of sails, full hydraulic service and spar removal for complete rig servicing. Additionally, in the last year she received a new genset, new running backstays and full bottom service and paint.

"Whirlwind" has been priced to sell and represents a tremendous value. You rarely will find a yacht of this pedigree in this price range. Considering her replacement cost as a new build there is nothing on the market currently that is comparable. If you enjoy the "semi-classic" and have been looking for a world class yacht, I would encourage you to inspect "Whirlwind" as she is not likely to last long in this market.
